Reefer Container Shipping: Five Controls That Protect Cargo

1 min read

Temperature-sensitive cargo needs correct set points, airflow, packaging, monitoring, and handover procedures from origin to destination.

A reefer container maintains a controlled environment, but it cannot correct cargo that enters the unit at the wrong temperature. Product preparation and operating discipline are essential.

Confirm the complete setting

Record temperature, ventilation, humidity, controlled atmosphere requirements, and maximum transit time. The booking instruction and container setting must match the product specification.

Protect airflow

Use packaging that supports circulation and keep cargo below the load line. Do not block the floor channels or leave large gaps that cause short cycling. A clear stowage plan helps the cold air reach every pallet.

Verify before gate-in

  • Inspect the empty unit and door seals.
  • Check the pre-trip inspection status.
  • Confirm the set point on the controller.
  • Record seal number and loading time.
  • Keep monitoring and exception contacts available.

A documented handover at each transport stage reduces uncertainty and gives the shipper evidence if conditions change.
